Hi everyone! My name is Heather and I am a Girl Scout. This website was originally part of my Girl Scout Gold Award project. I started my project in my sophomore year of high school, and now that I’m a senior I have since received the Gold Award but have continued with Scientesses because I found a real passion for it.
Scientesses is a play on the word princesses because I would like to show the influence women can have in the world through STEM. I host workshops at my local library where I perform different science experiments with neighborhood girls. Each workshop is centered around a certain STEM field. I have included the experiments we performed on this website along with other interesting ones. I have also shared my lesson plans with various school districts across the country who are interested in starting their own STEM program.
Why now? Why “Scientesses?”
I am an avid supporter of STEM and plan to double major in mathematics and science when I get to college. Unfortunately, the STEM fields are lacking women, but my project aims to change that. I have always wanted to make an impact on the world and improve conditions. I have been volunteering for as long as I could remember and I wanted to do something more. I needed something that would combine my passions and allow me to use my leadership skills. I asked myself if my skills would be best used as treasurer or president of my school’s Model UN or Ministry clubs, or would my skills best be used educating younger generations about future career options? Evidently, I chose the latter and now instead of only reaching my school community, I will reach the girls in my community who might not have realized they can have careers in the STEM fields.
